Secure the factual basis first.
Before making a declaration, documents, values and correspondence should be organised. Without that basis every decision is vulnerable.

After a death, invoices often arrive quickly: rent, operating costs, funeral, care home, electricity, insurance or old debts. Relatives sometimes pay from their own money to avoid doing anything wrong. That can later trigger disputes.
This article explains how to review invoices after death in an orderly way. The key is to distinguish securing costs, genuine estate liabilities and unclear claims.

Not every invoice after death is equally urgent. First determine whether it secures the estate or merely asserts a claim.
Before making a declaration, documents, values and correspondence should be organised. Without that basis every decision is vulnerable.
If the other side pushes for speed, check carefully what effect a declaration or payment would have. Time pressure does not replace a legal basis.
A clear next step is often better than a broad confrontation. Sort claim, evidence and goal before responding.
Paying from private funds does not automatically create clarity. Later the question becomes whether payment was necessary, whether it should be reimbursed from the estate and whether all parties would have agreed.
Payments to individual relatives or to creditors whose claim is not sufficiently evidenced are especially sensitive. Proper documentation protects against the allegation that the estate was changed unilaterally.
Urgent costs usually secure the estate: insurance, necessary maintenance, keys, storage or measures against damage. Funeral costs also need practical clarification, but evidence should remain traceable.
Other claims can wait until the procedural status is clearer. This applies especially to old private loans, alleged care services or invoices without a clear basis. Here review matters more than speed.
Before payment, clarify whether the invoice concerns the estate, whether it is evidenced and who may decide. If several parties are affected, coordination should be documented.
If uncertain, a short legal review is often cheaper than a hasty payment. Reimbursement disputes among heirs are usually burdensome and emotional.
